The Chinese government’s suppression of peaceful demonstrations in Tibet is shocking and is a fundamental violation of the protestors’ human rights. The closing of monasteries and the broad imposition of martial law in Tibet and adjacent areas is also completely unwarranted and wrong. The Chinese government should exercise restraint in responding to the protests and grievances of the Tibetan people and protestors, and should allow international groups, including the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, to immediately investigate the circumstances on the ground in Tibet and surrounding areas. The government should also enter into negotiation discussions with the Dalai Lama to find a peaceful solution to the current situation.
The United States government should demand that the Chinese end its oppression of the Tibetan protestors, and should demand that China uphold their basic and fundamental human rights.
